I know that there are some out there that feel this is the hardest thing in the world to do. I have found it easy, but you have to be up front with the sales person. I find that older sales people are hard to deal with. And that young female sales people on the most part don't seem to care. Fact is that most of them know someone that is of transgender.

Another way is to get one or two items from the ladies department, and two or three things from the mens department. You can use the two items from the mens department to sheald the one or two items from the ladies department you wish to try on. When they let you into the fitting room no one knows what your trying on. In most states it is against the law to film people trying on clothing. Some places have been sued for doing so.

First of all I stay completly away from dresses. Face it girls most of us are not built to wear them. I personally wear a size 9 skirt size, 5 panty, and a 12 to 14 blouse/bodysuit. Dresses simply will not fit our chests or shoulders and look worth a tinker's damn on our back sides. Stick with PULLON skirts and chich them down tight with a belt. Skirts and blouses also give that mix and match capability of so many different outfits. Fredrick's of Hollywood has many pullon belted skirt and blouse outfits that can be purchased seperately. With these types of outfits you don't need to try them on in the store. By the way I am one of the lucky few with a very supportive SO who gets a kick out of shopping with me.

Since I have a good idea of my size, I purchase a few outfits. Then I try them on at home (in private). If I don't like an outfit or if it dosen't fit, I return it. Be sure to carefully read store policies before being stuck with store credit only!

I just walk into a store/department store and walk around and look at the
dresses and when I find what I wanted, the sales girl usually will come up to me
but some times I go up to them and just ask them can i try this on, and they
usually direct me to the fitting room and help me into the dress.

If they say no, then I give them the dress and ask them why not, there are a lot of men
who wears dresses and then I walk out and never shop their again.

Girls.... **ALL** you need to do is to talk with a salesgirl and explain that you (yourself, not your 'sister' or 'girlfriend',) want to get a dress for yourself. If the salesgirl has any sense at ALL, she will discretely help you out,... but if she doesn't, DO NOT SHOP THERE EVER AGAIN! ) If they can't understand, they don't want customers. Plain & Simple. Take it from me I shop in M-mode!

I am very much a closet crossdresser -- and intend to remain so. As a result, I do virtually all my
shopping on the Internet. Sometimes, I can get my
(real) girl friend to go with me to a place like
Payless or one of the many "women's factory shoe
outlets", where I can find some "practical" styles
for MUCH less than shopping on the 'Net costs, but,
for the really sexy styles, I find the 'Net the best
source.

One thing that I did not realize until I started shopping on the 'Net is that virtually ALL the merchants who sell the really hot shoes (5-6+"
heels) offer sizes for most men (i.e., women's sizes
to 14). Also, I have learned from talking to them
that they actually sell at least as many such shoes
to men (for their own wear) as to women. Everyone
whom I dealt with, whether in e-mail or on the 'phone has been very respectful and very helpful. I myself wear a man's 9-1/2 or 10, and I find a woman's 11 an excellent fit. My favorites to date are a pair of 6" pumps (NOT platforms) I can walk on them -- but I don't roam too far from my boudiour in them. -)

Here in the US, it's really very simple. Most stores have an excellent return policy, as long as you leave the tags on and keep the receipts. I know my size, so I buy the clothes I like, take them home and try them on. The ones that I like, and that fit well, I keep the others I return for a refund. Of course, when you shop at stores like Ross, where I found a gorgeous, 100% wool, fully lined, long-sleeved dress in just my size for only US$14.00, I couldn't go far wrong, even if it didn't fit well and I couldn't exchange it.

Some of the nicest places to shop for clothes are the small 'pre-loved' boutiques, usually run by women and situated in the suburbs. In Brisbane there are many of these 'boutiques' and no doubt more in Sydney and Melbourne. I don't know about USA. Find them in the phone book under secondhand, or recycled. It's easiest for everyone if you phone first and ask if they are crossdresser friendly. Most will say they are, and may even suggest a quieter time for you to visit. They often have some fabulous outfits at much reduced from new prices. And if you go there regularly, they may also hold aside any larger size shoes which occasionally come in. Remember tho, that their main business comes from 'straight' suburban ladies, so it pays to be discreet. The manageress at my favourite boutique has, over time, become a dear friend. Try it yourself, you'll be surprised at how CD friendly some of these places can be.

No dresses for me! Skirts and tops are the only way to go. If you have narrow shoulders and good natural curves, a dress is ok.

An average (not obese) male CD will have too much around the middle and not enough hips to fill off the shelf dresses.

You could always try having a dress tailor made and you will look good. It only takes courage (Dutch is fine)and a bit of research to find a TG friendly shop in a quiet arcade.

In Ireland, where I live, crossdressing is still largely seen as a perversion, the country still being very conservative, so coming out to the general public (at least, where you live and where everybody knows one another) is clearly not an option. Therefore my shopping habits are twofold: Since trying anything on is out of the question, I buy most of my outer-wear in the many charity-shops. It is fun, like a treasure-hunt and even very pretty or unusual garments rarely cost more than 10 £. At such bargain prices I have no loss if it doesn't fit,-in fact having bought a good sewing machine, I can always use garments as 'raw'-material and design and sew my own. (TIP here: Dresses, that are too tight above the waistline make beautiful side-lace-up fetish-style wear.) The fact, that I work in theatre allows me, to use the 'Costume'-explanation (and you do have to explain frequently!) In department stores and boutiques it's the old 'buying for the wife'-story.(That way I can can be relaxed and confident and enjoy it.) If I like a particular Window display,I tell them, I saw this last sunday with the wife and now I'm getting it for her. Recently, having bought 3 dresses and a mini skirt, the girl said "She's really getting spoilt today, You must be madly into her!" I had to smile,"her" being Susanne, the girl couldn't have said anything more true.

When I see a dress I like, I take it to the cashier and pay for it , and take it home and try it on. If it doesn't fit I return it to the same store. When I select the dress, I look it over very closely, and try to decide if it has a pretty good chance of fitting. The only cache is that some stores do not allow you to return items, such as Burlington Coat Factory, I try to avoid these stores. Sears has a satisfaction guaranteed policy, so they almost always take it back.

When dressed as Stephanie, I don't have much of a problem
since I pass and use the dressing room as a female.
When NOT dressed, I will take the garment and go to the men's department where the rooms have locks on them

Here's a great tip if you aren't able to waltz up to the changing rooms of your favourite department store & try on a fab looking outfit. All you need is a peice of string, or strong ribbon. Hopefully you will also have some women's clothes that already fit properly. First tie a knot in one end of the string. Then, take an item of clothing that fits, say a skirt, and measure the waistband by pulling it flat & holding the knot on one side of the waistband & pulling the string to the other side. Mark the point at which the waistband ends, and tie another knot at that point. The next time you go shopping, all you have to do is pull your peice of string out of your pocket and measure it against the waistband of the skirt you want to buy. This can be done so discreetly that nobody will bat an eyelid. I have actually got one piece of string with 4 knots: one each for the thigh area of trousers, waistband of skirt / trousers, bust and shoulders meaning I can instantly tell if I will fit any garment I like the look of. Just make sure when tying your knots, you start with the shortest measurement first progressing through the longer measurements, otherwise you'll end up shortening the measurements you already have.

I find the best way to shop for clothes is through catalogs they might be a bit more expensive than shops but at least you get the privacy of home shopping you can order what you like and the convenience of trying the items on when it suits you.
