Hi all,

My wife and myself have had our ups and downs as we both come to terms with my crossdressing.

Whilst being mostly supportive, she would like the help of a profession councellor. Can anybody suggest someone who has an understanding of the unique situation we find ourselves in ?

South East suburbs of Melbourne would be preferrable, but beggars can't be choosers!

Many thanks...

Robin

Hi, good luck with this. My wife and I went through something similar a while ago. Some stuff needed sorting out so we tried some counsellers in the Dandenong area. I ended up having a session on my own going through with her the deep and meaningful whys and wherefores of being c.d. or a t.v. I have had friends in the same situation who had similar experiences. It seems most counsellers, psychiatrists or psychologists only have a rudimentary amount of knowledge about us.
Sorry for dropping a dampener on this, I do know how importnat it is, I just wanted to forewarn you. I do wish you luck.

Hi
Many years back when I was going through real traumas over my dressing, I saw a shrink who did her best to convince me that it was oK to dress , there was nothing wrong or "dangerous " about it. She became frustrated with my lack of progress and refferred me to a another shrink who had actaully participated in a research project on the whys and wherefores of cross dressing, transgerderism and associated topics .By participated I mean he actaully dressed and attended SH meetings or similar .I never saw his published work on the topic, but in conversation he was of the opinion that transvestism just happens,is harmless as does transgender and the best "treatment" was to encourage self acceptance of one and the trait.
He also told me that Bondage etc seemed to be popular with crossdressers and seemed to be part of the feeling of wanting to be submissive and feminine. His work by now may well be outdated but what he said back then seemed to make so much sense ! I really wish nopw days that I had really worked on self acceoptance So what I feel these days is that irrespective of what causes some one to be cd or tg or what ever the best thing to do is to work on your self acceptance with respect to it. whether this requires a professional shrink or not is up to you
Ironically when the guy had finished his research he had found withing himself a lingering desire to cross dress ! He also said he could see a certain logic to dressing, in that female clothes ar eso sensual compared to male, that it could be said that many would be attracted to them ....
Hope this is of help
Hugs

Hi Robin,
I have found Linda Midalia to be good and very positive. She has significant experience with crossdressers, and is a couples therapist as well. Details in the victorian resources section I seem to recall.
Happy counselling
Gwen

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I have passed the information into my wife, and she is keen "have a chat", probably with Linda.

If you want, I can keep you posted on progress.

Many thankx..

Hi Robin and all interested in this topic,

I am going to see a therapist/psychologist, Sue Cox. Got no idea what she is like but I thought I have to start somewhere. Will let you know what I think. If anyone else knows about Sue I would be interested in any comments + or -.

I got her name from this web site which listed others.

http://home.vicnet.net.au/~victrans/

This site also lists referals, many of them the same.

www.gisg.org
(gender identity support group)

I liked these sites as they listed many resources depending on what you are looking for and generally in Melbourne with links to other locations.

Linda Midalia is also listed here. I have spoken to her over the phone in the past and she did sound like she had a very positive, pro outlook for crossdressers etc. I would be seeing her but Sue is closer to me at the moment. Expect to pay about $100 per hour.

I've just separated from my wife after 11 years of marriage and 3 children. She wasn't interested in counselling so its great to hear you and your partner are.

I wish you all the best.

Rachael
