Hotel made famous in Priscilla Queen of the Desert because of Drag shows staged there. Located in Erskineville Road near the railway station., this is a great place to go on a Sat Night and mix with a varied group of people . A very friendly atmosphere and best of all , a great show in the Cabaret Bar from about 11.00 till 2.00 or so.
Highly Recommended.

Enjoy

Caroline,
Whilst I didn't do the show (stayed in the main bar) it was a friendly place and didn't get hassled.
Had some interesting chats with GG's.
Cheers,
Wendy

It was lovely to meet both of you there Well I had met Caroline before some years ago but only briefly. This time around it was nice to have a reasonable chat Couldnt stay too long in the front bar because of the smoke but the back was better anyway As always I really enjoyed the show, they are talented performers See you at the ball Tania xxx |

once upon a time, there used to be placed in Sydney, which was the centre or heart of gay Australia. For a long time now that icon of Sydney has been left to waste, fighting with the local council, when will it all be over.
I don't go out much as Penny but if there was one place in all Australia I would go it was the Imperial.
How can we show our support of this grand old flagship, who do we write to, to complain about the time it is taken to get this hotel back up and working. I'm sorry but it just looks like some of the cornerstones of a gay / transgender Sydney are being chipped away. For us trans-gender people this was a safe haven of place where you could go and not the hassles.
how do we show we care, how do we stop an icon from being destroyed?

More about the Imperials fight with Council
http://www.starobserver.com.au/news/2008/08/13/new-imperial-showdown/1157
"mperial owner Shadd Danesi has made another plea to the Council to allow his original request for 788 patron numbers, filing a fresh application for the hotel last Saturday.
He told Sydney Star Observer it was about keeping the surplus 346 people off the street corner that even the city’s traffic engineers acknowledge is dangerous.
This follows council’s decision last month to grant only a minor increase in patron numbers to 442 — despite the recent closure of the area’s other major gay venue, the Newtown Hotel.
“We’re expecting there to be much higher demand, because of the Newtown and because of the renovations,” Danesi said. “But we don’t want to see 360-odd people out on the footpath.”" |

Hi Penny
I posted advice on how to support the Imperial Hotel on 21st June'08 in the NSW Meeting Room forum under topic "Support for the Imperial". Who to write to, how to complain and so on.
All that still applies even though a new DA has gone into to Sydney Council. The Imperial needs our support!
Also by the way, keep the ear to the ground for coming news about the TrannyRadio TransFusion Christmas Party.
Saturday 29th November'08
Location? Guess where? The (new) Imperial Hotel!
The current battle with Sydney Council will not prevent the Imperial from re-opening.
Make sure you're there!
Regards Jan |
